Extreme Weather

Aligned with Tennis Australia’s Extreme Weather Policy,
GDTA’s operational process for playing in extreme weather conditions should be followed.

  • If BOM website at 6am indicates that the expected temperature for the day is 37° or higher, all GDTA/GWTC run matches, both junior and seniors are cancelled.
  • If matches are in progress and the temperature is thought to have risen to 37° or above, a venue coordinator, club or team captain/manager is responsible to access this website: http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDS65004.shtml , and to read the apparent temperature [AT] at West Terrace. If that temperature shows 37° or higher matches are suspended until conditions ease and agreement is reached to continue or to abandon the match.
  • In the case of thunderstorms and lightning, players should move away from the court and seek shelter when the time between a lightning flash and thunder is less than 30 seconds. Play can resume when the threat has passed, eg when the time between lightning flash and thunder is greater than 30 seconds.
  • Where there are strong winds or smoky conditions etc which present unacceptable risks to players, common sense should prevail and play be suspended until conditions ease and agreement is reached to continue or to abandon the match.

Weather implications

Weather is covered by Match Rule No.7. For a rain cancellation to be called, it would have to be “extreme”.  It will be up to teams at each venue to decide on any postponement or cancellation of play due to rain which would include close thunder and lightning. For hot weather, see post below.
